What is Herpes Simplex?

Herpes simplex is a viral infection that causes tiny sores or blisters to break out. These blisters or sores typically break out around the lips and mouth, but can occur anywhere on the face and even the genitals.

There are two types of herpes simplex. The first type of herpes simplex is known as herpes simplex virus type 1. This is the most common type of infection. It often causes people to have outbreaks that include fever blisters or cold sores.

The second type of herpes simplex is known as herpes simplex virus type 2. This is most commonly referred to as genital herpes. The sores/blisters that form from herpes simplex type 2 are similar to herpes simplex type 1.

Herpes simplex is extremely contagious. The virus can be passed from person-to-person even when there is no outbreak of sores or blisters.
