Collagen is the building block to firm, resilient skin that can maintain a youthful appearance even through the aging process. Once science determined that we begin to lose healthy collagen in our twenties, the quest for collagen-induction therapies was on.
Most recently, this quest has brought us into an age where we combine modalities to achieve the best possible results. At Bucay Center for Dermatology and Aesthetics, one of the skin rejuvenation treatments used by Dr. Bucay and her team is the Genius RF microneedling platform from Lutronic.
What Is Genius RF Microneedling?
We're excited to be among the first in San Antonio to offer Genius RF microneedling, a cutting-edge advance in collagen-induction therapy. Going beyond traditional microneedling, the Genius platform promotes collagen production and natural tissue regeneration. It does this by delivering fractional radiofrequency energy deep into your skin. This targeted approach rebuilds the skin’s foundation from within while keeping the uppermost layer of skin intact.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Microneedling?
Most adults are excellent candidates for microneedling, either with radiofrequency (RF) or without. The treatment is safe for all skin types and tones. The only exclusions may be pregnancy, breastfeeding, and active skin infection or acne breakout. To see what microneedling can do for your skin, schedule a consultation in our Sonterra or La Casita office.
Benefits of Genius RF Microneedling
The primary benefit of microneedling is that it stimulates the fibroblast cells to produce more collagen and elastin. Radiofrequency energy gently heats subdermal tissue which leads to immediate collagen contraction as well as additional stimulation for ongoing collagen production. With more collagen in the dermis, the skin appears:
- Firmer
- Brighter
- Smoother
- Softer
- More resilient
Microneedling also lessens the appearance of scars and large pores, with the added benefit of being nonsurgical and minimally invasive.
The Microneedling Procedure
Microneedling treatment may begin with an application of a topical numbing cream. This remains on the skin for 30 to 45 minutes to reduce the responsiveness of nerves in the epidermis.
After the tissue has become relatively numb, a small handpiece is passed over the skin. With each pass, the energized microneedles on the small applicator tip permeate the uppermost layer of tissue. After the entire area has been treated, your provider may apply a serum to soothe the epidermis.
How Does Genius RF Microneedling Differ From Other Devices?
What makes the Genius RF microneedling device is its intelligence. The handpiece contains monitors that gauge the skin throughout treatment, allowing us to ensure adequate depth and energetic power in each area of the face or body. The device’s intelligence extends to sophisticated sensing and feedback that provide us with the opportunity to truly customize treatment for all skin types, tissue thicknesses, concerns, and more.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is There Any Downtime Required After Microneedling?
While microneedling is minimally invasive and requires no significant downtime, you might experience minor redness and sensitivity for a couple of days. Patients should expect to look sunburned for a few days. Initially, redness may be noticeable, but this should decrease significantly over the first 24 hours after treatment. Many patients resume normal activities the day after treatment without feeling self-consciousness about their appearance.
Can Microneedling Be Done During Pregnancy?
Microneedling, particularly with radiofrequency (RF), is generally not recommended during pregnancy. This caution is due to the lack of research on the effects of the procedure on pregnant women and their developing babies. If you are considering microneedling and are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, consult with your healthcare provider to discuss safe skincare options.
Can Microneedling Help Prevent Aging?
Regular microneedling sessions can boost collagen and elastin production, helping to slow the aging process by maintaining skin elasticity and firmness. It's a proactive approach to youthful skin.
What Should I Avoid Before a Microneedling Treatment?
To prepare for microneedling, avoid certain medications and supplements that can increase bleeding, such as aspirin or fish oil, for a week before the procedure. We'll provide a detailed list of what to avoid during your pre-treatment consultation.
How Many Sessions Are Typically Needed to See Results?
While you should see improvements after just one session, optimal results often require multiple treatments. The exact number depends on your skin's condition and your aesthetic goals.
Can Microneedling Be Customized for Different Skin Types?
Absolutely! Microneedling can be customized to suit different skin types and concerns. Adjustments can be made in the needle depth and speed, ensuring each treatment is perfectly suited for your skin type and concerns.
What Precautions Should Be Taken Post-Treatment?
After microneedling, it's important to protect your skin from sun exposure and to use gentle, non-irritating skincare products. We will provide a post-care regimen that ensures your skin remains healthy and beautiful.
Is Microneedling Safe for Darker Skin Tones?
Yes, microneedling is safe for all skin tones. Unlike some laser treatments, it does not affect the pigment of the skin and is less likely to cause hyperpigmentation or scarring.
Can Microneedling Be Combined With Other Treatments?
Microneedling is quite complementary to other treatments! To achieve dramatic rejuvenating benefits, some patients combine microneedling with laser skin resurfacing or injectables. Botox or other wrinkle-reducing injections may be performed a week or two before microneedling to relax tensed muscles in the treatment area. Dermal fillers may be administered to address issues such as undereye bags or to plump the lips or cheeks. Laser treatments or chemical peels also go well with microneedling to enhance collagen regeneration.
Can I Wear Makeup After Microneedling?
Generally, we advise that you wait 12 to 24 hours after microneedling treatment before wearing makeup. This allows the body to completely close off the microchannels and infuse the area with collagen and elastin. Mineral makeup is ideal for application soon after microneedling treatments as this is less likely to clog pores.
How Frequent Can I Receive Microneedling Treatments?
Microneedling treatments with or without radiofrequency may be performed as often as every four weeks. After an initial series of treatments with Genius RF, patients may space sessions further apart or transition into traditional microneedling.
